We are blessed with a good number of local footpaths which take us through our lovely countryside.

Some information on walks from or near Failand can be found here.  Do compare the graphics with a local map before setting off.

Prior's Wood from Failand and Return

A choice of two walks from Failand which take you to the top end of the Wood where you will see a fabulous display of bluebells from mid-April until early May.

Please note:  the path is blocked at the southern end of the woods by the dams in Bullocks Bottom.  An oak tree has fallen across the path.  There is an alternative route which takes you along the top of the hill on the western edge of the wood.  There is then a path from the field at the top of the hill down into the valley (near to (3) in the image below).

Prior's Wood from Portbury - Bluebell Walk

We are lucky to be near Prior's Wood which has a spectacular display of bluebells in late April / Early May.  The woods are popular at this time of the year, so we recommend going late in the afternoon or early evening.  The following walk is just under 3 miles and is fairly easy going although there is a steep incline to start with and another shorter, steeper incline towards the end.  The path can become rutted and you may have to navigate fallen branches.

The notes in the graphic above apply to a clock-wise walk from Portbury village.

West Tanpit Woods

A delightful round walk from Failand of about 4 miles, this walk takes you across grazing, through a peaceful valley and up on to a ridge giving stunning views across the Severn before continuing and passing through this lovely little wood.

Walking anti-clockwise from the village hall, follow the footpath until you come to the wood and then follow the stream for about 1/3 mile until you come to a footbridge.  From here you can choose to continue to follow the path, bearing left up the slope until you come to a T-junction with a wide track.  Turn right to walk back to the cottages at Ferney Row from where you can retrace your steps back home.  Otherwise, from the bridge retrace your steps a short way until you come to a fork at which you turn left up a steep hill.  Continue to follow well marked footpaths over the fields back to the village.
